Basil is an accomplished attorney with over 20 years of experience, joining Spencer West in 2024 as a partner in the Corporate Law department. Specialising in Takeovers and Mergers, Basil brings invaluable expertise, having served as a founding executive member of the South African Takeover Regulation Panel. During his nearly 10-year tenure as Legal Counsel and Deputy Executive Director, he played a pivotal role in shaping South Africa’s takeover regulations.
Basil frequently advises clients on the Companies Act and its regulations, with a focus on Takeover Law, shareholder rights (including minority shareholder protection), directors’ duties and responsibilities, appraisal rights, and corporate governance.
A recognised expert in Takeover Law, Basil has contributed extensively to legal journals and has presented seminars and workshops for academics, students, and practicing attorneys. His passion for teaching extends to the classroom, where for the past three years, he has been lecturing post-graduate certificate programs in Business Rescue, Securities, and Corporate Law at the University of South Africa (UNISA), focusing on Takeover Law.
In addition to his extensive company law and corporate governance expertise, Basil has developed a strong proficiency in Data and Privacy Law. He has advised multinational companies and the South African Information Regulator on interpreting and implementing the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013.
As a key advisor on corporate governance, Basil also provides critical legal counsel to major pension funds in South Africa, offering guidance to Boards of Trustees and advising on pension fund law and regulations.
