Basil is an admitted Attorney with over 20 years’ experience and he joined Spencer West in 2024 as a partner in the Corporate Law department. He is a specialist in Takeovers and Mergers, having gained extensive experience in the field as a founding executive member of the South African Takeover Regulation Panel where he spent almost 10 years in the role of Legal Counsel and Deputy Executive Director.
Basil regularly advises clients on the provisions of the Companies Act and its regulations relating mainly to Takeover Law, Shareholder rights, including minority shareholder protection, Directors’ duties and responsibilities, appraisal rights and general corporate governance.
As an expert in the Takeover Law field, Basil has written extensively on Takeovers and Mergers in Attorneys’ journals and has presented various seminars and Training workshops on the subject to academics, students and practising attorneys and his passion for teaching has for the last 3 years also extended to the classroom where is currently teaching post-graduate certificate programmes in Business rescue and Securities and Corporate Law, with a focus on Takeover Law at the University of South Africa(UNISA).
In addition to his vast experience in Company law and Corporate Governance, Basil has also developed strong expertise in Data and Privacy law and has advised various clients, including a multinational company as well as the South African Information Regulator (a statutory body responsible for the regulation of newly developed data and privacy laws) on the interpretation and implementation of the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013.
As part of his Corporate Governance practice, Basil is also a primary legal advisor to major pension funds in South Africa where he provides general corporate governance advise to Boards of Trustees and general Pension Fund law and regulatory advice to the Pension Funds.
