Pam Dosanjh Phillips comments on outcome of Christian social worker discrimination case in People Management Magazine
In a recent high-profile tribunal case, Felix Ngole, a Christian social worker, successfully argued that he faced direct discrimination when Touchstone Leeds rescinded his job offer after discovering his past Facebook comments on homosexuality.
The case was outlined in a recent article in People Management magazine, highlighting that Touchstone Leeds had concerns that Ngole’s views may be a safeguarding concern for their LGBTQI+ service users, who are at high risk of self-harm ansd suicide.
The discrimination ruling sparked widespread discussion. Spencer West Employment Partner, Pam Dosanjh Phillips added to the discussion, saying: “Employers have a difficult task to navigate the delicate balance between respecting employees’ religious or philosophical beliefs and ensuring a safe and inclusive work environment”, further adding: “This case demonstrates that while individuals have the right to express their views, employers also have a duty to protect vulnerable service users.”
