The founders

Spencer West is an international law firm founded in 2014, when City of London lawyers Simeon Spencer and Antoine West found themselves on opposite sides of a transaction. Recognising a shared entrepreneurial mindset and common set of values, they saw an opportunity to evolve the traditional law firm model, creating something more flexible, more collaborative, and better aligned to the needs of both clients and lawyers.

From those beginnings, Spencer West has developed from a boutique London practice into a globally connected law firm operating across multiple jurisdictions. Built on a partner-led, fee-sharing model and grounded in a strong sense of community, the firm brings together entrepreneurial lawyers committed to collaboration, excellence, and delivering seamless cross-border legal advice.

Simeon Spencer
Back in the ‘80s, Simeon co-founded with the legendary Charlie Hicks a high-end food retail business, selling to top chefs who are now celebrated names. Hankering to be a lawyer, he qualified as a barrister then a solicitor and became a Partner at international law firms Morrison Foerster and Morgan Lewis. In 2010, growing increasingly frustrated with the limitations of the traditional firm structure with high fees and billing targets, he set up his own boutique practice.
Antoine West
Antoine trained and practised at Linklaters and was a Partner at several City law firms including City and international law firm HFW. After several years working for construction clients, he stepped down as a Partner to work flexibly for several companies in-house, working closely with the owners and finance directors, while establishing his own business for the development and construction of hotels.

Forming Spencer West LLP

In 2014, Simeon Spencer and Antoine West found themselves on opposite sides of a corporate transaction but quickly realised they shared a common vision. Both driven by a corporate international background and entrepreneurial spirit, they envisioned a more flexible and client-focused approach to legal practice. This partnership, grounded in shared values, marked the beginning of Spencer West’s unique journey.

By 2016, after two years of fruitful collaboration, Antoine formally merged his practice with Simeon’s firm. Together, they set out to build a law firm that prioritised technical excellence, a commitment to collaboration, and a business-minded approach.

Building a community of talent

In 2018, Spencer West had grown into a successful two-partner City firm with a strong culture and a loyal client base. Recognising the potential to scale this model, Simeon and Antoine introduced a partner-led, flexible structure that combined the strengths of traditional practice with a more modern, entrepreneurial approach.

This marked the beginning of Spencer West’s evolution into a broader platform for experienced lawyers. The firm began attracting high-calibre talent from leading international firms and senior in-house roles—lawyers who valued autonomy, collaboration, and the opportunity to work differently.

By summer 2019, the firm had grown to 15 partners, united by a shared commitment to excellence and a more adaptable way of practising law.

A turning point: the global shift

The period from 2020 to 2021 marked a defining moment – not just for Spencer West, but for the legal profession as a whole.

As many senior lawyers re-evaluated how and where they worked, Spencer West’s model came into sharper focus. What had begun as a flexible, partner-led structure proved to be highly effective in enabling collaboration across locations, supporting more dynamic client relationships, and delivering work without the constraints of traditional office-based models.

By 2021, the firm recognised the full potential of this approach. The same model that had driven success in London could be applied internationally, bringing together high-quality lawyers across jurisdictions to deliver seamless, cross-border advice and to attract increasingly sophisticated, international work.

Scaling internationally

From 2022 onwards, Spencer West entered a new phase of growth, expanding beyond its UK roots into key international markets.

The firm grew rapidly across offshore jurisdictions, Europe, Africa, and beyond – establishing a presence in locations aligned with client demand and global business flows. This expansion strengthened the firm’s ability to operate as a truly cross-border practice, connecting lawyers across jurisdictions to support complex, multi-country matters.

By 2023, Spencer West had grown to over 260 partners, with new offices in Europe and strategic relationships across additional regions. The firm also broadened its capabilities in areas such as private wealth, reflecting the increasingly international nature of client needs.

Momentum and global presence

In 2024 and 2025, the firm continued to build its international platform, expanding into Africa, the Caribbean, Europe, the Middle East, Asia Pacific, and the United States. Each new market enhanced Spencer West’s ability to deliver integrated advice across jurisdictions, supported by lawyers embedded in their local markets but working collaboratively as part of a wider global team.

In 2026, Spencer West had reached a significant milestone – growing to more than 360 partners across over 25 jurisdictions, including a major launch in the United States with offices in New York and San Francisco.

A globally connected firm

Today, Spencer West operates as a full-service international law firm, serving clients across multiple jurisdictions through a single, integrated platform.

While the firm began as a boutique London practice, it has evolved into a globally connected business. Our lawyers are based in key markets around the world, working together seamlessly to deliver consistent, high-quality advice across borders.

We organise around our clients – not our offices – bringing together the right expertise wherever it sits to support international businesses, investors, and private clients navigating complex, multi-jurisdictional challenges.

Looking ahead

Spencer West continues to build on the strength of its model – one that combines entrepreneurial lawyers, deep expertise, and a collaborative approach that transcends geography.

As Spencer West continues to grow, we remain focused not only on scale, but on alignment.

In 2026, the firm took a deliberate step to further strengthen its collaborative culture, ensuring that all partners are fully invested in the Spencer West model and committed to working together as one firm across jurisdictions.

This marks an important evolution in our journey. Prioritising long-term relationships, trust, and seamless cross-border collaboration as the foundation of our continued international growth.

Our focus is on continuing to grow a truly international firm, attracting exceptional lawyers in key markets, strengthening cross-border collaboration, and supporting clients whose needs increasingly span jurisdictions.

The firm’s journey reflects both where it started and where it is going – from a boutique London firm to a globally connected law firm designed for modern, international legal practice.
