UK Government launches AI copyright consultation
With artificial intelligence already upending longstanding conventions on copyright protection, the UK aims to bridge the gap between human creativity and AI functionality.
The UK government has today (17 December) announced a 10-week consultation, concluding on the 25th of February 2025, to clarify copyright law. This initiative seeks to support the growth of the creative and artificial intelligence (AI) sectors, while maintaining customary protections for intellectual property owners.
Commenting on the consultation, Data Protection Partner Ralph Arrate described the move as “a much-needed step towards clarity in the complex relationship between copyright and AI,” noting that “the use of copyrighted works to train AI models raises significant legal and ethical questions.”
